Stimulant adhd drugs are split in two subcategories depending on what the active substance is:
The first three types all act on neurotransmitters. They make the brain release more neurotransmitters or bring more to the game. Also they inhibit the absorbtion(or reuptake) by the neurons of the neurotransmitters.
The brain is a big matrix of cells called neurons. The neurons are separated by gaps called synapses. Neurons text each other… errrm communicate with each other by sending a kind of chemicals called, you guessed it, neurotransmitters to gaps (synapses). From the gaps the neurotransmitters travel to another neuron and get attached to that other neuron via a receptor. And that’s how information is relayed around your brain.
For good reception of the message enough neurotransmitters need to be produced and released. Also the neurotransmitter must stay long enough in the gap for it to get attached to the other neuron’s receptor.
The exces is taken back(recaptured/reabsorbed) by the neuron that produced it. In the ADHD case the reuptake is done prematurely.
The neurotransmitters are produced and stored within a neuron.
Nobody knows exactly how the last group of drugs work, I’m talking about the blood pressure drugs.
